The Great Commission

8/30/2025
Good morning church family,

GIVING THANKS:

Thanks to Kevon Turner for organizing the teen game night last night! It was a great success and everyone had fun!

Giving much thanks that Ashley Stephens Mother Mary is home from the hospital.
Matt DePinho’s back pain is much better, thank you all for your prayers.

Thanks to all who have generously donated non-perishable food for our in-house food pantry!  It is fully stocked for now and what a blessing to be able to provide food for those in need!
SPOONER HOUSE is in need of non-perishable food
Just a reminder that we have an ongoing need at SPOONER HOUSE for non-perishable food.    Thanks for always remembering to bring food in for them.
Here is the link in case anyone may be interested in volunteering or learning more about what they do.   Spooner House is operated by area congregations in providing food, shelter and support services to people in need.   We have several here in Trumbull whom you can ask about volunteering – Paula Slauson, Tammie Carrie are well connected there and can answer any questions you may have, or contact Liz Holcomb directly at eholcomb@act-spooner.org or (203) 225-0453 x 105.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

Our fervent prayers continue to cover Leo Benevento as he waits for a perfect donor match for a bone marrow transplant.   Prayers for his mother Gina and the whole family while they wait.

Pray for missionaries throughout the world for their message to be true to God’s Word, and for their safety and protection in countries that present perilous situations.
Prayers that we all can effectively promote the gospel of Jesus Christ here locally to our family, friends, neighbors, and be a beacon of light for all.
Prayers for our daughter Jody’s friend Amanda Liu who has Lupus and recently hospitalized for sepsis.  She’s already had several surgeries and is in need of many prayers for healing.  She is married and has a 4 year old son.

Betty Adams was not able to have the second cataract surgery since she still needs some healing from the first one (which failed).    Prayers for Betty to heal quickly.

Eric Stephen’s Mother Penny Stephens had hip replacement surgery.  Prayers for Penny and all of the Stephens family as they have so many who are struggling.
Gus Gomez’s son Chiavo has Meningitis and is in the hospital being treated.

Psalm 91:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.”
God is light, and there no darkness in him at all.”  1 John 1:5
“I Am the LIGHT of the World.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”  John 8:12

The Sun is the star at the centre of the Solar System.   It is a massive, nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core, radiating the energy from its surface as visible light and infrared radiation with ultraviolet energies.   It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth.   The Sun does not have a definite boundary, but its density decreases exponentially with increasing height above the photosphere.    The Sun consists mainly of the elements hydrogen and helium.  It has a stellar magnetic field that varies across its surface.  This magnetic field varies in time and location.

The facts about the Sun are many, too many to even read, let alone include in this newsletter.  Suffice it to say, that it is simply magnificent as our Creator is who spoke and it came to be!
The Sun rotates faster at its equator than at its poles.   The Earth orbits the sun in an elliptical path, taking 365 days to complete one revolution.  The Earth’s axis is  tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbital plane.   As the Earth orbits the Sun, different parts of the planet receive varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year.  During summer in one hemisphere, that hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, receiving more direct sunlight.  The transition periods of spring and autumn occur when the tilt is such that both hemispheres receive roughy equal sunlight.
Jesus calls His followers to share the Gospel and make disciples of all nations.
Scripture emphasizes the importance of spreading God’s Word, proclaiming His love, and serving others locally and around the world.
Lord willing, on September 6th Paula and I will be traveling to Europe to join a group of Christians from Pitman, NJ church of Christ.  We will be traveling for a bit initially, then heading to Marseille France to help the church of Christ there restore a 100 year old building which will be used for Christian Outreach Center in the area.   The building is an old monastery which was used by the monks to accommodate retired missionaries and serve as a nursing home.  The four-story edifice will permit a significant expansion for their outreach project.   Several members of the church from the U.S. are going over to help with the upgrades.  It is estimated that the renovation will take at least two years to complete.
The church of Christ in Marseille France is growing.  In 1996 the Marseille Mission team launched a week long program of intensive Bible study, charitable work and evangelistic outreach.  About 20 people participated and two years later, that led to the inauguration of Christians on Mission Bible School and Spiritual Internship.  What started to be 20 members, is now up to 100 members (mostly converts who have married in the faith, and their families are expanding with a baby boom.  Their most recent newsletter shared that they are going to have to make a parking lot for baby strollers!   Praise the Lord!
The newsletter about the Marseille France church and what they are doing  is posted on the bulletin board in the church foyer.  There is a segment on page two and bar code that will allow you to watch a 4 minute YouTube video presenting CEM (Christians on Mission Bible School and Spiritual Internship there).
We ask for your prayers for a safe trip.  We look forward to being back for worship and the Hymn Sing on Sunday September 28th.   Know that you will all continue to be in our prayers, and that we will miss you all!

The Great Commission in the scriptures is a charge for all baptized believers to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:19-20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
God’s Spirit empowers us to witness and share the Gospel across all regions of the world, and locally.

Romans 10:13-14
“For, ‘everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. ‘How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?
People need to hear about Jesus in order to believe and be saved.  This is our true purpose here on this earth.
The prophet Isaiah was willing  “to be sent’  which reflects the heart of missionary work – being ready to go wherever God calls.

Matthew 9:37-38
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the LORD of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus urges prayer for more workers to help bring people to faith, highlighting the need for missionaries.

Jesus emphasizes the urgency of sending more workers into the field to spread the Gospel.
1 Chronicles 16:24
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.”
We are called to proclaim God’s glory and His works to all the nations of the earth.

Missionary work brings the LIGHT of salvation to all people, especially those who have not heard the Gospel.
Romans 15:20
“It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where christ was not known.
Paul’s missionary desire reflects the importance of sharing the Gospel in unreached areas.
John 20:21
Again, Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you!  As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.””
Jesus sends His followers into the world just as the Father sent Him, to bring the message of salvation.

Missionary work requires readiness to share the Gospel at all times, in all circumstances.
Psalm 96:3
“Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.”
Proclaiming God’s glory and deeds is a central mission for every believer, reaching all nations.
Luke 24:47
Repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem.”
The message of repentance and forgiveness must be preached to all nations, beginning locally and spreading globally.

Missionaries persevere in sharing the Gospel, knowing that their efforts will bear fruit.
2 Corinthians 5:20

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”

The Gospel must reach the entire world, as a testimony to all nations before the end comes.
Matthew 24:14
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Paul’s dedication to spreading the Gospel highlights the singular focus of missionary work.
1 Peter 3:15
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

Missionaries must always be ready to explain their faith and share the hope of the Gospel.

Those who bring the Gospel to others are seen as bearers of beauty and the life-saving news!
Psalm 105:1
Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name;  make known among the nations what he has done.
Missionaries are called to make known God’s works and His saving power among all nations.

Missionaries boldy proclaim the Gospel, knowing it is the power of God for salvation.
Mark 13:10
“And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.
Jesus emphasizes that the Gospel must be preached worldwide before His return.

Missionary work involves bringing people to the saving knowledge of Christ, bringing life to others.
John 15:16
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit.”
Missionaries are ambassadors for Christ, representing Him and sharing His message with the world.

“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:9
“For we are co-workers in God’s service;  you are God’s field, God’s building.”
We have much work do to right here in the United States.
Tell your story to someone and send the LIGHT!

KEEP SINGING:
SEND THE  LIGHT
Send The Light

There’s A Call Comes Ringing Over The Restless Wave,
“Send The Light! Send The Light!”
There Are Souls To Rescue, There Are Souls To Save,
Send The Light! Send The Light!

Send The Light, The Blessed Gospel Light;
Let It Shine From Shore To Shore!
Send The Light, The Blessed Gospel Light;
Let It Shine Forevermore!

We Have Heard The Macedonian Call Today,
“Send The Light! Send The Light!”
And A Golden Offering At The Cross We Lay,
Send The Light! Send The Light!

Let Us Pray That Grace May Everywhere Abound,
“Send The Light! Send The Light!”
And A Christ Like Spirit Everywhere Be Found,
Send The Light! Send The Light!

Let Us Not Grow Weary In The Work Of Love,
“Send The Light! Send The Light!”
Let Us Gather Jewels For A Crown Above,

Send The Light! Send The Light!

How important is it to share the message of salvation with people all over the world?

Luke 19:37-40
“When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”

Jesus replied, “I tell you”, he replied, “if they keep  quiet, the stones will cry out.

May we all spread the Good news of Jesus Christ,  and may the stones, be quiet!
Matthew 10:7-8
As you go, proclaim this message:  ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near

Be the LIGHT!

TO GOD BE THE GLORY GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE.

In Him,

Bruce & Paula
