Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork.”

The moon’s gravitational pull and moonlight affects nature in countless ways…creating tides, influencing the behavior of marine animals and other animals and ecosystems all over the world.   Moonlight affects SO many things, too many to count!

Sea turtles use the moonlight to navigate during their migrations.  The brightness of the moon, influences nesting behavior with more nests occurring during full moons.  Hatchlings rely on moonlight to find their way to the ocean after emerging from their sand covered nests.  The lunar cycle can impact predator activity affecting hatchling survival rates.

Sea turtles use the Earth’s magnetic fields to navigate back to their birthplace beach, according to a study that used loggerhead genetics to investigate their travels. After swimming for years in a giant loop from nesting grounds in North Carolina and Florida to North Africa, the turtles find their way back to nest on beaches within about 40 to 50 miles of where they were born. This process is known as geomagnetic imprinting.
Sea turtles hatch at night and emerge from their nests under a full moon or a moonless, cloudy sky. They are sensitive to the light near the horizon, and on nights with a full moon and no clouds, they can easily follow the ocean’s reflection.

The Bible mentions the moon in various contexts, emphasizing its role as God’s creation to mark time and provide light.
In Genesis 1:14-18 we read that the moon was created along with the sun and stars to provide light, separate day from night, and mark the “signs, and for seasons and for days, and years.”
God describes the moon as the “lesser light” to “rule the night”.

In scripture, the moon is significant as one of God’s “great lights” for marking time, seasons and festivals, and it symbolizes God’s consistent order and enduring covenant.

Psalm 104:19  “He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.
Psalm 136:9  “the moon and the stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.
The moon is often mentioned in scripture in contrast to the sun, and its worship was a form of idolatry, against which the Israelites were warned.

The Hebrew calendar was lunar based, making the new moon a crucial marker for the beginning of each month.

New Moons and full moons were tied to religious observances. The new moon marked the beginning of a month, and festivals were celebrated during the full  moon.

The moon’s reliable and cyclical nature serves as one of many symbols of God’s unchanging nature and enduring promises.  Psalm 89:37 compares the covenant with David to the moon, established forever.  ”   ....it will be established forever like the moon,  the faithful witness in the sky.”
The Prophet Jeremiah highlight the moon’s stability and dependability, which are part of God’s unchanging order.  Jeremiah 31:35 “This is what the LORD says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar – the LORD Almighty is his name.”

The moon does not generate its own light, but reflects the suns light!  This is how creation testifies to God’s AMAZING CREATION.

The Prophet Joel foretold that the sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
Joel 2:31-32…”The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.”

and in Revelation 6:12
The Prophet Isaiah describes a future day when the light of the moon will be as bright as the sun, signifying the glory of God’s kingdom.

Human beings have a tendency to worship anything that seems greater than we are, and moon-worship has been a historical problem.
God warned us about this in Deuteronomy 4:19.
“When you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars – all the heavenly array- do not be enticed into bowing down to them.”
Some cultures have attributed divine qualities to the sun and moon and built altars to them, and worshiped them.
The moon is a creation of God just as the earth is, and not worthy of worship or praise!
When we turn our focus from the Creator to the creation, we are guilty of idolatry.
Romans 1:25

An important spiritual truth we can learn from the full moon, is that, as bright and beautiful as a full moon appears, it has no brilliance of its own.  It relies entirely upon the sun for its light!  Without the sun, the moon is merely a hunk of dark rock.  Likewise, we human beings have no light of our own.  We were created in the image of God to reflect His brilliance and glory!
Genesis 1:27

When we surrender to Almighty God, seek Him with all our hearts, and are clothed in Jesus’ blood, we reflect His glory.  We were created to be reflectors of His light in this world.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the LIGHT of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
When we shine in the glory of God, we are not to be worshiped as the moon is not to be worshiped.  We are to point people to Jesus by committing ourselves to reflect HIS LIGHT.

Those who are obedient and follow Jesus have eternal life and the LIGHT OF GOD’S ETERNAL GLORY to look forward to!
There will be no need for the sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and it’s lamp is the LAMB!

WE SERVE AN AWESOME GOD WHO LOVES US BEYOND MEASURE…..
PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME!
KEEP SINGING:

How Great Thou Art – Bob Perry Acapella

HOW GREAT THOU ART

O LORD my God,
When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars,
I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee.
How Great Thou art,
How Great Thou art.
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!
When through the woods,
and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds, sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur,
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee.
How Great Thou art,
How Great Thou art.

Then sings my soul,
My Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!

And when I think of God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died, to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God, to Thee.
How Great Thou art,
How Great Thou art.
Then sings my soul,
My Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art,
How great Thou art!

As we read in Psalm  8:3-4  “What is mankind that You are mindful of them?”
God’s enduring nature is evident in all that we see.
The moon is described as a faithful witness in Psalm 89:1-37 of God’s promises.
