The relationship that parents have with their children, is one that cannot be put into words. The role that Mothers and Fathers both play, are roles precious to God, each having a distinct purpose. This deep loving relationship parallels with the Love of our Father in Heaven. It’s a significant love; a sacrificial love and an unconditional love. It’s a love that never fails.
With Mother’s Day upon us, we want to focus on the tremendous role of a mother. The sacrifices mothers make run deep and are from the heart.
It starts at the moment of conception, then 9 grueling months of carrying the fetus, labor through the birthing process, and having the beautiful opportunity to witness a new little life being born. This precious little one is a mother’s greatest gift from God.
God created families and gave mothers a unique place in that unit. A mothers love is unselfish and unconditional. Mothers give of themselves in an unending capacity to love and nurture in their roles. Far beyond what is done in the home, many work full-time jobs. Mothers leave little or no time for themselves and are the emotional backbone of the family.
Christian mothers have true purpose and the highest responsibility to rear their children for the Lord.
God describes the ideal woman, who is portrayed in Proverbs 31:30, as one who fears God. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
Proverbs 8:13 “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil, pride, arrogance and the evil way.”
Mothers who fear God, pass their faith down to their children. To teach them what is right and good, encouraging them to make choices that please God.
We have shared below a few biblical Mothers who displayed exemplary characteristics for all to follow…In 1 Samuel, Hannah’s story is a beautiful one. Her story deals with infertility, answered prayer, a dedicated faith to the Lord, and true sacrifice.
Hannah dealt with infertility and prayed for a child for many years. God heard her cries. Her prayers were answered and she conceived and bore a son, naming him Samuel (which means Heard by God). God’s gift to her pierced her heart. She was touched at the Lords mercy on her life. Read her heartfelt prayer of thanks in 1 Samuel Chapter 2.
Hannah promised to dedicate her son to God and brought him to live with the Eli the Priest at the temple. This was a true sacrifice since her firstborn son would be raised by someone else! Hannah visited Samuel yearly and made him a home-made coat that she poured her heart and soul into. There is no doubt that Hannah shed many tears missing the child she bore, but with every hand-made stitch, the coats she made for him showed her deep love for him. The beautiful part of this story, was that Hannah’s love for God was greater than her sacrifice to give up her son. She gave Samuel over to Eli the Priest to raise, for God’s glory. Although her heart ached, she remained grateful to God for his gift. Samuel lived a life dedicated to the LORD, and he went on to lead the people of Israel, anointing Israel’s first and second kings – Saul & David.
In Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59 we learn about another Mother who loved God and sacrificed greatly for her son.
Jochebed was the Israelite mother of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. Jochebed was a Godly woman who raised her children prayerfully and humbly. She recognized early on, that there was something special about her youngest child. To escape the wrath of the decree set forth by the cruel King Pharaoh to kill all first-born male babies, she was determined to find a way to save her son. God blessed her plan. She put her baby in a hand-made basket of reeds, and hid the basket in the tall grass by the Nile River. Being sure this hand- made basket was safe, she used tar and pitch to keep it water proof. She had her daughter Miriam watch over the baby as the basket hid in the reeds, to make sure he was safe. Then she watched as God worked! Pharoah’s daughter discovered the baby crying in the basket, and she named him Moses! She brought him to live with her with the cruel King Pharoah. Jochabed was then asked by the King’s daughter to go to live with her and the king, in order to nurse the child. Jochabed slipped into Pharaoh’s family as a nurse so she could raise her son, who just so happened to grow up and liberate the Jewish people from slavery! Jochabed’s efforts of love and sacrifice poured into Moses who became one of God’s foremost leaders in freeing the Hebrew people from Egypt, leading them to the Promised Land.
Mary, the mother of Jesus is another mother in the scriptures, that exemplifies motherhood.
The story of Mary is lengthy but a beautiful one to read in its entirety.
In Galations 4:4 and the account in Luke share details of Mary in her later years. The scriptures do not mention her early life.Mary had to be beyond special, for God to have chosen her to carry his one and only Son, the Prince of Glory. The gospels poignantly record the angel telling her that she would conceive a son by the Holy Spirit, and that the child will be called holy, the Son of God. There is no easy way to condense the story of Mary. Suffice it to say, God was with her and carried her through the birth, his life and ultimately the death of her son, Jesus Christ. Not sure if we can even imagine the pressure, responsibility and obligation she felt in knowing that the son she would bear, was the Son of God. She gave birth to him, she cared for him and she loved him as none other. She knew him, inside and out. She watched him perform miracles, and teach the disciples. In Luke 2:19 we read that “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”Mary followed Jesus right to the end of his life. She watched him be tortured, and hung on the cross. Six long hours where she watched him writhe in pain and die, must have felt like an eternity for her.Can any of us imagine watching our child be crucified? As Jesus hung on the cross in agony, he made sure his mother would be taken care of after his passing. This speaks highly of His true regard for his mother. In John 19:25-27 we read “So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son! Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”
These three biblical mothers walked with God and put Him first as they parented their children. God’s blessings flowed through their heart and soul, as their sons grew to glorify Him.Mary, Did You Know?
Mary, did you know,
that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know ,
that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know, that your baby boy has come to make you new;
This Child that you delivered, Will soon deliver you?
Mary, did you know
that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
that your baby boy
Would calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know, that your baby boy Has walked where angels trod,
And when you kiss your little baby, You’ve kissed the face of God?
The blind will see,
the deaf will hear,
The dead will live again,
The lame will leap,
the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb!
Mary, did you know
that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know,
that your baby boy
Was Heaven’s perfect Lamb, And the sleeping Child you’re holding,
Is the great, the Great I AM!
May God be glorified by the family unit He created, and we thank Him for Mothers!
Our love in Him,
Bruce and Paula
