The 3rd commandment

The 3rd commandment

8/16/2025
Good morning church family,

Olivia Bell (the daughter to Carmen and David Bell who were long-time members at Trumbull), stayed with us last week and introduced us to her friend Max DeLoach.  Both Olivia and Max attend Harding University and are in their senior year. Olivia wanted to show Max her hometown here in Connecticut.   After they explored Newtown and all of the places that were endearing to Olivia while she lived here, Max had a plan in place.  He proposed to Olivia at Harkness Memorial State Park which followed with a beautiful dinner in New London.   Max is Editor in Chief of the Harding Newspaper and plans to further his education to be a History Professor.  Olivia will be pursuing a career in Psychology.  Aside from their academic achievements, they are both humble servants for the LORD, Praise God!  It’s a beautiful thing to see the children who grew up here in our congregation, to be spiritually mature adults, living to please God!

GIVING THANKS:

Bob DiScala is healing well from his recent hernia surgery, continued prayers for complete healing.

Thanks to all who attended Mildred Perkin’s memorial service yesterday.  Mildred left a lasting impression on us all and will forever be in our hearts.   If the link below doesn’t work from this email, google Howard K. Hill funeral services and search for Mildred Perkins.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

Leo Benevento was approved for a bone marrow transplant.  They are using the world wide web within their database of potential donors who will be a ‘perfect match’.  There is a lot involved with this process, but prayers for God’s divine intervention with making this perfect match happen.  Leo continues to have blood transfusions until then.   The doctors have given the family a heads up that Leo will become very sick through this (as he endures chemo for several weeks and beyond).   Leo continues to have a confident happy spirit while they wait.
Hang in there Leo and be strong in the LORD and in HIS MIGHTY POWER!    Ephesians 6:10
Prayers for Patrick & Nadine Keller as they drive to Canada soon to visit family.
Prayers for Justin Coon who is moving to Pennsylvania this week to begin his college training program.

Psalm 91:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.”
The cuttlefish is an amazing cephalopod closely related to squid, octopus, and nautilus and is known as the “chameleon of the sea”.   Cuttlefish are remarkably intelligent and have an incredible ability to change the color of their skin.  They are masters of disguise and blend into whatever environment which surrounds them!

The video below explains how the cuttlefish  transforms itself to totally match his surroundings.  Pretty incredible. Praise God for His majesty and creation!

In the Hebrew Bible, the most sacred name of God is represented by the Tetragrammaton YHWH (יהוה), which is often vocalized as “Yahweh” or rendered as “LORD” in many English translations. This name is first revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14, where God declares, “I AM WHO I AM.”
God’s Holy Name is integral to our faith and worship.   It signifies not only the identity of God but also His character, His authority, and presence. The reverence for God’s name is a recurring theme in both the Old and New Testaments, underscoring its sacredness and the importance of honoring it.

The name YHWH is considered so holy that Jewish tradition avoids pronouncing it, substituting it with “Adonai” (Lord) during readings.   God’s name is so revered in the Jewish faith, that when they write it, they do not spell it in it’s entirety and spell it only in part:
 “G _  D”,   or   “Y   W  H”

The Third Commandment, found in Exodus 20:7 underscores the sanctity of God’s name:

This commandment highlights the importance of using God’s name with reverence and respect.  To not take His name in vain.

Other names and titles for God in the Old Testament include “Elohim” (God), “El Shaddai” (God Almighty), and “Jehovah Jireh” (The LORD Will Provide), each reflecting different aspects of His nature and relationship with His people.

In the New Testament, the reverence for God’s name continues, with Jesus Christ emphasizing the importance of God’s name in the Lord’s Prayer:

Matthew 6:9

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name“.

This prayer reflects the deep respect and sanctity attributed to God’s name, urging believers to honor it in their lives.  The word ‘hallowed’ means sacred, consecrated, or revered.   Jesus asked us to pray to God acknowledging that His name is hallowed.  To hallow God’s name is an outward action of reverence.

The name of Jesus itself holds significant power and authority.

Philippians  2:9-11
 “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”

This scripture  highlights the exaltation of Jesus’ name and its central role in our Faith.
God’s name is holy.
Psalm 111:7-9
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.
They are established for ever, and ever,
enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
He provided redemption for his people;
he ordained his covenant forever –
holy and awesome is his name.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise.”

Psalm 99:1-3
“The LORD reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
Great is the LORD in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
Let them praise your group and awesome name –
He is Holy.”

God’s name is more than a mere label; it encapsulates His essence and attributes. It is a revelation of His holiness, sovereignty, and faithfulness.

As believers, we must revere the name of Yaweh.    The holiness of God’s name calls for a life of reverence, worship, and obedience. It challenges us to reflect God’s character in all we say and do, ensuring that His name is honored in all aspects of life.
The call to bear God’s name responsibly is a profound aspect of Christian discipleship, as seen in 1 Peter 4:16

But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear that name” .
This calls us to have an inner bar of integrity to rise up above what the world calls normal talk.   Do we blend in with the world such as the cuttlefish does, or do we stand out by the way we speak, act and live?

Taking our Lord’s name in vain has become commonplace in society, like it’s nothing.

Profanity is prevalent in the workplace, schools, television, movies, and rolls off the tongue with complete emptiness and foolishness.    For the Christian, foul language is heartbreaking to listen to, for we hold God’s name in reverence.  With every profane word we listen to, it is like watching Jesus be flogged and beaten.   With every profane word spoken, His name is trampled and spat upon.
As a society we are desensitized to hearing foul language on television, in movies, and in every day conversation.
As followers of Jesus we are called to be very careful with the words we use.

We must hold the name of Jesus up higher than all names.
1 Peter 4:11
“If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.  If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”
We must stand apart from the world and reflect the Light of Christ in our words and actions.

God’s Holy Name demands our reverence,  worship,  praise and a life that reflects His holiness.

1 Peter 1:14-16
As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do for it is written:“Be holy, because I am holy.”

Matthew 7:21-23
“Not everyone that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?   And then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
We are to strive to be Holy and set apart from the world….to be aliens.

GOD IS WORTHY! KEEP SINGING:

We Will Glorify the King of Kings – Lyrics Acapella

We will glorify the King of Kings
We will glorify the Lamb
We will glorify the Lord of Lords
Who is the great I AM!

Lord Jehovah reigns in majesty
We will bow before His throne
We will worship Him in righteousness
We will worship Him alone!

He is Lord of heaven, Lord of earth
He is Lord of all who live,
He is Lord above the universe
All praise to Him we give!

Hallelujah to the King of Kings!
Hallelujah to the Lamb!
Hallelujah to the Lord of Lords,
Who is the great I AM!

We will glorify the King of Kings,
We will glorify the Lamb,
We will glorify the Lord of Lords,
Who is the great I AM

1 Peter 1:13
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action;
be self-controlled, set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
May we live as children of light and actively reject darkness, embracing the transformative power of God’s light in our lives!

May we walk in truth, righteousness, and goodness, reflecting the character of God, who is light!
May we remember that we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation proclaiming His EXCELLENCIES

TO GOD BE THE GLORY GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE.

In Him,

Bruce & Paula
